Introduction
The Great Courier Club ("Courier", "we", "us") is a location-based mobile game developed by an independent developer. This policy explains what information the app and its companion services collect, why, and what choices you have. Courier is currently in beta testing.
Information we collect
Account information: the email address and password you sign up with (passwords are stored as bcrypt hashes, never in plain text). We also send a verification email through our email provider, Resend. Gameplay data: your in-game stats (deliveries, distance walked, rating, coins, awards), the parcels and messages you place or interact with, your bag contents, and your friends list. Device and push data: a push-notification token (via Firebase Cloud Messaging) if you allow notifications, so we can notify you about game events like deliveries, friend requests, and overdue parcels. Support messages: anything you submit through the in-app or website contact form, including the reply email address you provide.
Location data
Courier needs your device's precise location to show nearby parcels on the map, let you pick up and deliver them, and place objects near you. The app only uses your location while you're using it ("while using the app"); we do not track your location in the background. We store your most recent known location on your account (used for showing you the map and for anti-cheat checks), and we log location events tied to gameplay actions (placing parcels, searching for parcels, delivering parcels) so we can compute rewards, build the in-game search-activity heatmap, and detect implausible movement (for example, teleporting or spoofed GPS) to keep the game fair. Location logs are linked to your account, not shared publicly, and are not sold or used for advertising.
Safety disclaimer
Courier is a location-based game that asks you to walk to real-world places. We take reasonable steps to keep placements sensible — parcels and destinations are usually placed at real points of interest near you, and you only ever need to get within about 50 meters of a parcel or destination to interact with it, never the exact point itself. As a last-resort fallback in areas with few points of interest, a parcel or destination may instead be placed at a road junction — but again, you only need to come within about 50 meters of it, so you never need to stand in the road itself. Even so, we cannot verify every location on Earth, and the area around a parcel or destination may occasionally include somewhere you shouldn't go (private land, unsafe terrain, restricted areas, and so on). You always see a parcel's destination before you pick it up, so it's your responsibility to judge whether an area is safe or accessible before heading there; if it isn't, you're free to simply not pick it up, or to drop a parcel you're already carrying without delivering it. Playing Courier never requires you to enter a road on foot to pick up or deliver a parcel, and no feature in the app is meant to be used while driving. If you choose to play while driving, that is entirely your own decision and against our advice; the game's speed bonus never requires or rewards breaking traffic laws or speed limits, and you're always responsible for following the traffic laws and rules that apply to you. We are not responsible for any injury, property damage, legal trouble, or other loss resulting from where you go or how you behave while playing. Play safely, obey local laws, and use common sense.
How we use your information
We use your data to operate the game: authenticate you, show nearby parcels and players, compute rewards and rankings, send you transactional email (like email verification) and push notifications you've opted into, respond to support requests, and detect cheating or abuse. We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell your data to anyone.
Sharing your information
Your username, rating, stats, and awards are visible to other players (this is a shared-world game with friends and leaderboards). Your email address, password, precise location history, and support messages are never shown to other players. We share data with a small number of service providers who help us run the game: Resend (transactional email), Google Firebase (push notifications), OpenWeatherMap (weather lookups by coordinates only, not tied to your identity), and our hosting provider. These providers only receive what they need to perform their function and are not permitted to use your data for their own purposes. We do not share data with advertisers or data brokers.
Where your data is stored
Game data is stored on a server we operate directly, not on a third-party cloud database platform. Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS).
Data retention
We keep your account and gameplay data for as long as your account exists. Some anti-cheat and search-activity location logs are retained for a limited window (up to 365 days) and then aged out automatically. If you delete your account, your account row and the data directly tied to it (bag contents, friend relationships, device tokens, sessions, notifications) are permanently deleted immediately. Parcels are part of a shared, ownerless game world and are not personally identifying, so they remain in the world after account deletion the same way they would if simply left unclaimed.
Your rights and choices
You can review and correct your account details from the Settings screen in the app. You can delete your account at any time from Settings — this permanently and immediately deletes your account. You can turn off push notifications at the OS level or in the app's notification preferences. You can also revoke location permission in your device settings at any time, though core gameplay (finding and delivering parcels) requires it. To request a copy of your data, ask a question, or request deletion by email instead of through the app, contact us using the details below.
Children's privacy
Courier is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the game develops, especially during beta testing. We'll update the date at the top of this page when we do. Material changes will be announced in-app or via the game's community channels.
